Working With Rails

PantherFOTOS.com is a web hosting service aimed at both the amateur and professional photography market. We provide a facility where photographers can upload high resolution jpegs via our multifile Flash based upload interface. These photographs are then resized, thumbnailed and watermarked.

It doesn’t end there :). Photographers can then utilize all manner of Web 2.0 goodness: tags, multiple categories, social networking contacts. We’ve thrown in some AJAX where appropriate (with a view of further utilizing this to improve the interactive experience to our visitors).

This is my first Ruby/Rails production and I’m very proud of what I’ve managed to put together in two months. This does demonstrate how flexible and powerful Rails is considering I’ve never seen Ruby code two months ago.

Technically I’ve got 40 tables powering pantherFotos to provide: tagging, categorization, blogging, forums, uploads and image resizing, a currency called the Credit in which photographs can be sold and bought, subscriptions management, accounting tables with journals for full auditing and so on. All of this is held together by 3,300 LOC. Again, a very good demonstration of how concise Ruby in combination with Rails is.

PantherFotos.com was developed in my spare time and mostly on my daily commute on the 6:30am train from Weston-super-Mare to Banbury and back. If you spot someone on that train that is happy coding away (thanks Ruby/Rails) on an old beat up Dell laptop then do say hi… :)
