Working With Rails

Started with Rails ages and ages ago – been building real world commercial stuff with it ever since (including high-availability and financial stuff with no room for errors).

I like RSpec (it makes my code better) and Cucumber (it makes my apps better). Code-wise, I fell in love with Smalltalk, which is why I now love Ruby.

Code spends more time in maintenance than it does being written – so we should make it simple, readable and expressive.

Open source stuff that I’ve been involved in:

• GSTRuby – extensions to GNU Smalltalk to take the best of Ruby’s syntax
• Bigwig – an AMQP client daemon with a plugin architecture, designed for reliability (developed independently of but very similar to Nanite)
• Object Factory (makes testing without fixtures simple)
• Rujitsu (helper methods for Ruby)
• IsitRuby19 (community powered gem compatibility for Ruby 1.9 – also available for JRuby
