Been involved in or around software development for the last 15 years. Currently using Ruby on Rails to develop a data browsing and knowledge sharing system for survey data – http://www.methodbox.org or https://github.com/myGrid/methodbox. Part of the University of Manchester’s myGrid team responsible for the Taverna workflow system, myExperiment and Bio-Catalogue. Also active in the open source community and recently developed https://github.com/ianwdunlop/busfinder for UK bus info using data from data.gov.uk (demo site at http://busfinder.dyndns.org). Used various languages and frameworks over the years – Delphi, Fortran, C, Java, Rails, Javascript, Perl, Flex/Flash, HTML, CSS – my main focus is on Java, Rails and Javascript. Generally use Eclipse/Maven for Java and TextMate for Rails. Experienced with web server deployment and support using apache and passenger on Unix systems. Have set up and supported many Linux/MacOS servers with MySQL and apache. When not coding I try to get out and cycle.
