My personal (and favorite work) projects tend to merge information from computers and humans. For example, I like mechanized documentation systems which let the computer study the source code for low-level details, but let humans write about high-level design issues, non-obvious coupling between modules, etc.
I’m a big fan of Ruby (Matz has excellent taste in language design), but I also like to learn about other languages (eg, Haskell) which show me other ways to think about programming.
For the past couple of years, most of my work has been in support of Google SketchUp (eg, writing plugins, adding external infrastructure). My pet project (when I find a tuit) has to do with using Semantic Web technology to analyze metadata about Ruby code bases.
