Working With Rails

I’m a Software Engineer and for the last whilst an Entrepreneur that’s spent the last 2 years designing, developing, testing, launching a beta website, marketing, taking feedback, reworking, and am finally about to redeploy the first released version of www.OnTheMap.ie … think of yelp.com … but for Ireland.

The project was developed with Ruby on Rails on top of MySQL, deployed with Capistrano onto a CentOS 5 dedicated server. The official release is on schedule and will be made public in the Sept. 2008. The current beta is live, however it’s missing some functionality and eye-candy.

I can definitely claim to be a quick study, results focused, organized, entrepreneurial, great communicator and can be flexible with my hours. Over the last 2 years I’ve become a strident Ruby on Rails champion, and with my added Engineering, Software Design, Development, People and Project Management experience, I know how to get a job done.

In my past life (i.e. prior to 2007) I was working in a Telecoms Software house for more than a decade, initially as a Senior Developer (C/C++, Sybase RDBMS, CORBA, Solaris) and then in the last 6 years as a Group Manager, Project Lead, Project Manager, Systems Architect.

Lest it be said that I’ve more than 20 years design, coding and test experience, more than 10 years with Object Oriented technologies … and a wealth of people and project management experience.

I live and work in Limerick, Ireland, and am looking primarily for a remote working situation … though I’d be happy enough travelling to the occasional meeting. I’m fully kitted out with a design and development environment. I use Mac OS/X for development, but am comfortable on any platform, since I’ve worked on everything from PDP/11’s, VMS, Unix, Xenix, Solaris, Linux, Windows (of all vintages) and most recently OS/X.

I think I would bring immense experience to anything I put my hand to …
