I’m a self-taught programmer with ten years of experience in a variety of languages and environments. I began programming with C and C++ and later learned a number of other languages to add to my arsenal, including Java, Python, PHP, and of course Ruby. I have six years of experience specifically building web applications, for which I used PHP until I discovered and fell in love with Ruby on Rails two years ago.
My career working on the web began around the forefront of the belated web standards movement, and I consider myself well-versed in understanding and application of modern web technologies, including XML, JavaScript, CSS, and (X)HTML, as well as SQL and the basics of database design. While I consider myself a developer more than a designer, I do know some of the fundamentals of page layout and typography and am able in almost any circumstance to hack CSS into doing what I want it to do consistently across browsers.
Developing web applications is a passion for me, and I would love nothing more than to contribute my talents to a team working on an innovative application of the new web using Ruby on Rails. I’m currently working at a company which uses a rather mangled mess of PHP to power its online school administration system, and I feel a very strong desire to leave PHP behind for good.
