You are here: Home Gettingstarted
The simplest way to get started with WorkingWithRails is to dive in and start browsing. You can see the profiles of thousands of other Ruby On Rails ("RoR") developers, find out about the companies they work for, the projects and sites they're working on, and more.
You'll want to add your own profile. Regardless if you're completely new to RoR or if you've been using it since the early days, creating your own profile is your gateway to becoming part of this exciting and rapidly evolving community. Creating a profile is completely free, safe and secure.
Having added your own profile you might want to make recommendations of other people you've come across whilst you've been using RoR. This lets other members of the community see whose work they might be interested in, by observing an individual's authority ranking.
You should definitely say "Hello" on the forums, where you can discuss all things Rails with other members of the community, including all the big names.
Next you'll want to add details of the projects you've worked on or know about. You can list your affiliations to groups of developers, projects you're working on, sites that use RoR or companies that are using it internally. Why? There are a few reasons. Firstly, it will allow people new to RoR to find examples of its use and help them get to grips with it. Secondly, the more well-known sites and projects that use RoR the more momentum it will gain, the wider its acceptance, the more exciting RoR jobs that will exist, and so on. There are more subtle reasons too - it gives you a chance to show off your work, helps you recruit other people to help out, and much more.
Browse the existing entries. For example, see an overview of how many RoR developers there are in each country or find out whose RoR blogs are the most popular.
Create a profile - once you've created an account you'll be asked to create a page entry which tells the world a bit more about you and your use of RoR. Its optional, but all the big names in RoR have a profile on the site.
You're in good company!
Create a project, website, company or group - you can create as many entries in each of these categories as you wish.
Got a Rails question you need answered or looking for advice on getting Rails adopted at your workplace? Come join the discussions in the new forums.
A note about ownership of entries...
Because WorkingWithRails is an open community it allows anybody to create anything. If you've a friend who is using RoR but has chosen not to register, you can add an entry on their behalf. However, if a person creates their own entry, or takes ownership of a entry that someone else created for them, only they will be allowed to update it in future. For more information, see the FAQ.
