We recently got some really high praise from a client:

Thank you for everything you have done so far. Our reception has been very strong from our customer base and we seem to be off to a great start. […] We have a pretty good idea that our next feature will be around X. Right now, I need to know how much money this feature may cost in order to get a better idea of time frames and what we need to do with respect to current customer load and additional funding. […] The original estimate of N hours was almost spot on, and so was most everything else, so an estimate/guesstimate is fine. I’m sure this will generate more questions.

While the kudos are awesome, what really stuck out to me was the client’s perception that our estimate was spot on. I totally understand that perception: from a happy client’s perspective, a good estimate is in the result, not the process. But if an outside observer were to judge our estimation process for the project by conventional standards, they’d probably conclude that the estimate we put together was pathetic. “What?” you say? Let me explain…

First of all, estimate quality typically has a high correlation to the granularity of the tasks being estimated. The more a feature is decomposed, the more probability the estimates generated for the sub-pieces will be accurate. But on the push for this client’s initial Minimum Viable Product (MVP) we didn’t do any granular estimation – the N hours estimated were based on looking at their MVP as a whole.

It gets even more pathetic, though: you see, one important way to make sure you give good estimates is to closely track the actual time spent vs. the estimate on each task, and then to adjust your upcoming estimates as you figure out the variance between those two. Yet on this project, we didn’t even have individual, per-task estimates, and we didn’t track actual time on a per-task basis. So there was no midstream adjustment to the estimates at all – the original estimate was N hours, and that’s what we hit within 10%.

Now there is one indicator of a good estimate that we did have, and that is prior experience with the problem space. We’ve built a lot of web applications over the past four years, and we also had some pre-existing domain knowledge around the problem the client was solving with the initial MVP. But this just takes the estimate from really pathetic back to a plain old pathetic: there has to be (and is) a very powerful offset to the apparent problems with this estimate that made it work where it shouldn’t have.

Here it is:

Our estimate was spot on because the client was engaged, focused on a truly minimum viable product, and trusted us. In a nutshell, the estimate was awesome because the client was awesome.

We do our best work in a time box: give us an hourly budget, and we’ll have a constant conversation with you as we develop, constantly tweaking, simplifying, removing and even adding things to make sure the desired outcome is achieved when we hit the end of the runway. The reason it works is that in a startup, the desired outcome is not software to spec. The desired outcome is an MVP that you can take to market and get concrete feedback on.

As a matter of fact, in a startup environment the “keys to effective estimation” are all liabilities. Breaking features down to a granular level is time consuming and half the time you’re decomposing features that don’t make it into the final product. Tracking estimates vs. actuals is useless when the strategy and approach to each task change multiple times between estimation and realization. And while domain knowledge is awesome, startups are often solving a unique problem, making domain knowledge hard to come by.

Good estimates happen to savvy founders, since they set a reasonable time box and then actively engage with the team building the product to simplify and fit the result into the estimate. If that sounds like you, we need to talk!

Als Angelina Jolie seinerzeit den Vertrag fr den Thriller The Tourist unterschrieb, stellte sie eine Bedingung: Sie wollte den Regisseur von Das Leben der Anderen Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck als Regisseur fr den Film. Nachdem Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck sogar in Verhandlungen mit dem Studio Sony war, lehnte er die Regie von The Tourist aufgrund kreativer Differenzen letztendlich doch ab. Angelina Jolie blieb weiter an Bord, an der Seite ihres neuen Co-Stars Johnny Depp.

Jetzt meldet Entertainment Weekly, dass Angelina Jolie anscheinend doch noch ihren Willen durchgesetzt hat: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ist als Regisseur zum Film The Tourist zurckgekehrt. Offensichtlich hat Sony dem Drngen ihres weiblichen Stars nachgegeben, und auch Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck drfte sich berlegt haben, dass seit seinem 2007er Oscar-Film Das Leben der Anderen die Karriere nicht mehr in Gang kam. Das war Grund genug fr beide Seiten, die gegenseitigen Differenzen zu berwinden.

Bei The Tourist handelt es sich um ein Remake des 2005 erschienenen franzsischen Thrillers Anthony Zimmer, der es in Deutschland nicht in die Kinos geschafft hat. Die leicht vernderte Handlung dreht sich um eine Interpol-Agentin (Angelina Jolie), die einen ehemaligen Liebhaber (Johnny Depp) aufspren soll, da dieser als internationaler Krimineller gesucht wird. Ursprnglich sollten die Hauptfiguren von Tom Cruise und Charlize Theron gespielt werden. Bharat Nalluri war als Regisseur vorgesehen. Doch es kam anders, da Tom Cruise mit Cameron Diaz in Knight & Day vor der Kamera stehen wird.

Luft alles nach Plan, wird The Tourist 2011 in den Kinos dieser Welt zu sehen sein. Der Drehbeginn mit dem neuen Regisseur ist fr dieses Frhjahr angesetzt.

Gestern feierte Guy Ritchies Sherlock Holmes seine Deutschland-Premiere. Neben dem Regisseur waren auch Robert Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams und Mark Strong anwesend. Nur Jude Law hatte sein Kommen abgesagt.

In den USA feiert Guy Ritchie mit seiner Interpretation von Sherlock Holmes bereits groe Erfolge, jetzt brachte er den Meisterdetektiv auch nach Deutschland: Bei der Premiere von Sherlock Holmes in Berlin schritten der Regisseur und die Schauspieler Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong und natrlich Hauptdarsteller Robert Downey Jr. trotz Minusgraden ber den Roten Teppich. Lediglich Jude Law, der im Film als Dr. Watson zu sehen ist, fehlte. Eigentlich war auch er angekndigt gewesen, doch er hatte sein Kommen vor Kurzem abgesagt. Robert Downey Jr. kommentierte ironisch, Jude Law sei selbst auf einem anstrengenden Promotrip: „Er besucht jeden Tag eine andere Karibikinsel.“

Die anwesenden Stars gaben vor der eigentlichen Vorfhrung aber bereitwillig Auskunft ber den Film Sherlock Holmes und ihre Begeisterung fr den von Arthur Conan Doyle erdachten Meisterdetektiv. Guy Ritchie erklrte, er hat schon als 6-jhriger Kassetten mit den Abenteuern von Sherlock Holmes gehrt und trumte schon seit 30 Jahren von einer Verfilmung des Stoffes. Auch Robert Downey Jr. ist mit den Krimigeschichten aufgewachsen und hatte groen Spa daran, seinen Kindheitshelden zu verkrpern: „Holmes ist ein smarter Typ, so einen kann ich gut spielen.“

Auch zu den Freiheiten, die sich Guy Ritchie bei der Interpretation genommen hat, uerte sich der Regisseur. In Sherlock Holmes ist die Hauptfigur ein echter Actionheld mit Schwertkampf- und Martial-Arts-Kenntnissen. Guy Ritchie sagte dazu: „Sherlock Holmes hat regelmig geboxt und kannte sich mit Martial Arts aus. Wir haben diese Seite nur etwas mehr betont.“ Er ist sich sicher, dass der Film dem Erfinder Arthur Conan Doyle gefallen htte.

Selbst berzeugen drft ihr euch von Sherlock Holmes von Guy Ritchie ab dem 28. Januar. Dann ist der Film regulr in den Kinos zu sehen und ihr knnt Robert Downey Jr. und Jude Law als legendres Detektivteam gegen den von Mark Strong verkrperten Bsewicht Lord Blackwood kmpfen sehen. Durch 3D wird die Grenze zwischen Film und Wirklichkeit immer undeutlicher. Das ist eigentlich eine feine Sache. Was aber, wenn die berwltigten Zuschauer nach der Vorstellung keine Lust mehr auf den grauen Alltag haben?

Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora von James Cameron zeigt uns die Utopie einer besseren Welt: Die Natur ist farbenfroh und leuchtet im Dunkeln, alles ist beseelt und die Ur-Einwohner leben im Einklang mit der Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Gott ist in dieser Welt nicht nur ein schner Glaube, sondern per Internet erreichbar und nach dem Tod wird die Seele ins ewige Gedchtnis der fremden Welt gestreamt.

All das wird durch die revolutionre Technik von Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora so berzeugend vorgefhrt, dass der Zuschauer strker als je zuvor selbst Teil dieser Traum-Welt wird. Wenn dann nach einigen Stunden Pandora gerettet ist, wird die gerade noch in allen Farben leuchtende Leinwand dunkel und der arme Kinogast wird wieder daran erinnert, dass auerhalb des Kinos weder ein Flugdrache auf dem Parkplatz steht und die letzte Sichtung eines grnen Baumes allein dem Weihnachtsfest zu verdanken war. Stattdessen warten Klte, Regen und der Zweifel am Sinn des Lebens.

Dieser Widerspruch ist anscheinend zu viel fr einige Besucher von Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora. In Foren berichten sie von Selbstmord-Phantasien und der Hoffnung, dass auch ihre Seele nach dem Tod in die Rechenzentren von James Cameron wandern wird.

Auf der Website Naviblue postet ein Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora -Fan: “Seitdem ich Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora gesehen habe, bin ich deprimiert. Ich habe die wunderbare Welt von Pandora und all die Na’vi gesehen und ich mchte einer von ihnen sein. [...] Ich habe sogar die Selbstmord-Phantasie, dass ich nach meinem Tod in einer Welt hnlich der von Pandora wiedergeboren werde und alles so wie in Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora ist.”

Auch der 17-jhrige Gamedesigner Ivar Hill aus Schweden berichtet laut CNN-Entertainment von Depressionen infolge von Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora: “Als ich heute Morgen aufwachte, nachdem ich gestern das erste mal Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora gesehen hatte, erschien mir die Welt … grau. Es fhlte sich an, als htte mein ganzes Leben, alles was ich getan und wofr ich gearbeitet habe, seinen Sinn verloren. [...] Ich sehe einfach keinen Grund mehr … berhaupt noch irgendetwas zu machen. Ich lebe in einer sterbenden Welt.”

In dieser Weise uerten sich laut CNN auch weitere Besucher der Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora -Vorstellungen. Zum Glck ist es bisher bei Gedankenspielen geblieben. Haben wir es hier mit einem eigenen Krankheitsbild, dem Avatar-Syndrom, zu tun? Wir mssen bedenken, dass durch die strkere Erlebnisfixierung des Kinos auch der Abgrund zwischen Film-Zauber und Alltags-dnis tiefgreifender wird. Vorerst knnen wir nur hoffen, dass kein Kinobetreiber auf die Idee kommt, whrend der Filmpause Tokyo Hotel in den Zuschauerraum einzuspielen.

I’ve just recently started using autotest again, and it’s making development so much easier, and more enjoyable. If you do any TDD (test driven development) with Ruby, you need autotest running, as it really improves the experience massively.

With autotest, and growl, you can plod away writing failing tests, implementing code so that they pass, and then rinse and repeat - all the way getting messages flash up telling you when tests are broken, and when tests are passing again. It’s a great way to iterate through writing code to meet user requirements, and incredibly satisfying as you turn failing tests into passing ones, with working code.

So what do you need to do to get it setup? You’ll need to install ZenTest, which contains autotest amongst some other tools:

sudo gem install ZenTest

You can then install the following gems too if you don’t have them already:

sudo gem install autotest-growl
sudo gem install autotest-rails

Finally, you’ll need to setup a small config file, called .autotest in your home directory (~/.autotest):

require "autotest/growl"

That’s all you need in that file, now just hop into a Rails project directory, and run autotest:

cd /path/to/project
autotest

You’ll then get output from the initial test run, and from now on while autotest is running, when you edit a file, it will re-run any tests it deems to have been impacted by a change to that file. It will pop up test failures and test successes as growl notifications too. To force it to re-run the entire test suite, press ctrl+c once. To end autotest completely, use ctrl+c twice in quick succession. Bear in mind for things like database schema changes, you’ll need to do the following to get the test database schema up to date and inline with the development database, otherwise your tests when being run under autotest will fail:

rake db:test:prepare

Now get cracking with those user stories, get those tests written, and then turn them from red to green!

Dem Parade-Magazine sagte sie ber Nacktheit in ihren Filmen: „Solange du eine fiktionale Figur spielst, ist es normal und so banal wie frhstcken. Gems opnieuw installeren

Na sommige systeemupdates of bij het volledig opnieuw instellen van je ontwikkelomgeving, is het noodzakelijk om je gems opnieuw te installeren.

Het is altijd handig om voordat een dergelijke actie ondernomen wordt, te controleren welke gems er geinstalleerd staan:
gem list --local

Het resultaat hiervan is bijv:
actionmailer (2.3.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.2, 1.3.6) actionwebservice (1.2.6) activemerchant (1.4.1) activerecord (2.3.2, 2.0.5, 2.0.2, 1.15.6) acts_as_ferret (0.4.1) authlogic (2.1.1) authlogic-oid (1.0.4) builder (2.1.2) ...

Dit resultaat kan je ergens opslaan als referentie. Maar om nou al deze gems apart te gaan installeren…

Dit probleem had ik vorige week ook, dus heb hier een klein Ruby scriptje voor geschreven:

Het ‘system’ commando was hierbij nieuw voor mij. Anders dan de backtick (`) operator ondersteund het system commando zowel de output en de input richting de system console. Dit houdt in dat als je je password in moet voeren, dit gewoon kan, en het resultaat van de installatie kan je gewoon teruglezen.

As you probably already know, Rails 3 is just around the corner. There are some pretty nice features being added and one of them is the ability to customize the way the generators work. I personally prefer Haml over ERB, RSpec over Test::Unit and Factory Girl over Fixtures. So let's see how we can configure a Rails 3 app to do that.

First, follow Yehuda's instructions on how to create a Rails 3 app. Next, you have to tell Rails that you want to use Haml, RSpec and Factory Girl. First, add this somewhere in the Gemfile:

gem "haml"

only :test do
  gem "rspec"
  gem "rspec-rails"
  gem "factory_girl"
end

Then, re-run the bundler and initialize the Haml plugin:

$ gem bundle
$ bin/haml --rails .

Finally, you have to install the custom generators for the frameworks that you want to use. I found a repo on github that already had RSpec, so I forked it and added Haml and Factory Girl. Clone the repo into the lib/generators directory of your app:

$ git clone git://github.com/pjb3/rails3-generators.git lib/generators

Now, in the config/application.rb file in your app, near the bottom there is a section related to config.generators. Put this in that section:

config.generators do |g|
  g.template_engine :haml
  g.test_framework :rspec, :fixture => true, :views => false
  g.fixture_replacement :factory_girl, :dir => "spec/factories"
end

Here is where we reap the benefits of the modularity in Rails 3. What this says is that we want to use Haml as the template enging, we want to use RSpec as the test framework and we want to generate fixtures with our generated specs, but we don't want to generate view specs and that instead of fixtures, we actually want to use factory girl and we want the factories to be put into spec/factories. Whew! So does this all work?

$ script/generate rspec:install
$ script/generate scaffold person name:string dob:date age:integer male:boolean bio:text

At this point you should see that Rails has generated what we want, which is scaffolding that uses Haml for the views, RSpec for the tests and Factory Girl for the fixtures. Run the migrations, start the server and open the browser http://localhost:3000/people to see your scaffolding in action.

Now if you try to actually run rake spec, you'll get an error, at least I do. I'm not sure that RSpec 1.X is going to ever work with Rails 3. I think the intent is for RSpec 2 to be compatible with Rails 3, so keep an eye out for that.

O firmă românească de curierat pe care prefer s-o păstrez anonimă (indiciu: are numele ca trupa CARGO dar cu US în loc de O, deși mai bine li s-ar fi potrivit cu ES în față și T la coadă) a fost contractată să-mi livreze un colet de la București.

Curierul s-a prezentat la expeditor, a ridicat coletul, a preluat documentele și l-a trimis încoace, la Tg. Mureș unde a ajuns dupa vreo zi-două.

Mă uit "pă net" după numărul de transport și aflu că obiectul a părăsit depozitul din oraș și se află într-o mașină pe a cărei rută din acea zi mă găsesc. Așa că stau frumos și aștept.

Se face ora 12; un telefon rapid la firmă ne spune că nu pot ajuta cu nimic... dar primesc numărul de telefon mobil al curierului.

Care nu răspunde.

Se face ora 15 și știu că după 16 nu se mai fac livrări, așa că încerc din nou. De data asta îmi răspunde o voce slabă, de foarte departe, ca și cînd posesorul ei ar avea telefonul pe speaker așezat între perne pe bancheta din dreapta a unei Dacii papuc pe care o conduce.

- Păi v-am căutat și nu v-am găsit! îmi spune.

- Imposibil, zic. Sîntem 3 oameni aici și vă așteptăm de dimineață de la 9.

- Pe la 10 am ajuns și eu, șoptește doamna -- căci era o posesoare, nu un posesor. Am sunat la interfon și n-ați răspuns!

- Aici n-a sunat defel interfonul, o informez. Da' de ce nu m-ați sunat la telefon?! Că doar de-aia cereți numerele de telefon ale destinatarilor!

- Nu mai am minute, mi se replică sec.

Mă redresez din picajul stupefacției și contraatac slab:

- Păi de ce nu mi-ați dat un bip, ceva?! Că vă sunam eu...

Nu reușesc să deslușesc răspunsul, dar reușim să convenim să ne întîlnim în fața blocului peste 5 minute.

10 minute mai tîrziu doamna cu papuc parchează în dreptul meu, coboară și-mi completează actele pe botul Daciei. Nu mă abțin și întreb:

- Cum vine asta, că nu mai aveți minute?!

- Păi le-am consumat, că-s puține.

- Bun, și îmi trimiteați pachetul înapoi la București pe motiv ca dvs. ați vorbit prea mult la telefon?! Ce vină am eu că vorbiți atîta?

Ridică din umeri.

- Semnați aici și aici. Să-mi dați mărunt, că n-am.

Aproape o săptămînă mai tîrziu (adică azi-dimineață la 8 și-un pic), intru în scară și îmi văd numele pe panoul special destinat publicității care atîrnă pe peretele din interiorul scării, de după ușa cu interfon. Da, acel panou pe care nimeni nu se uită, niciodată. E o notă de transport de la aceeași firmă cu papuci și fără minute, care mă informează că am un colet:



Vă întreb, stimați domni și doamnă:

  1. Cînd mi-ați lipit fițuica?! E tot aia pentru coletul de-acum o săptămînă ori am alt colet?
  2. De ce n-ați trecut data și ora pe foaie?! Că uite, este loc destul. Să știu și eu cînd m-ați căutat, nu?!
  3. Dacă nu mergea interfonul, cum ați răzbit pînă în scară ca să lipiți fițuica (în cel mai greu vizibil loc posibil) și ce v-a oprit să bateți la ușă? Troienele de zăpadă din scara blocului, focul încrucișat de mitraliere, extratereștrii cu lasere, gripa porcină?
  4. Ce vină am eu că "vi s-au terminat minutele"?! Nu mi-ați cerut, la București, numerele de telefon tocmai ca să mă contactați la livrare?
  5. Ce înseamnă "localitatea 17-18"? Înseamnă cumva că am la dispoziție exact o oră pe zi ca să mă prezint după coletul pe care poate l-am primit? Vreți cumva să vă aduc și niște minute, recompensă pentru efort?
  6. Pe cît punem pariu că nu mai apelez la serviciile dvs. niciodată? (Sau cel puțin pînă voi avea probleme și mai mari cu firmele concurente?)

Funny how some sites I’ve rarely visited still appear. Neither live.xbox.com, eizo.dk, nor quotagio.us are particularly common destinations for me, but I guess not many domains have z, x, or q in them.
